The Takeaway About Tequila

There are some really fun things to know about tequila, and we want to get you updated on the 411 before you come hang out with us at the best lakefront restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks. Lazy Gators is opening on May 6th, and you've got a lot of fun facts to brush up on before then!

Did you know that tequila is made from at least 51% Blue Agave? Mezcal can be made from any variety of the 100s of different agave varieties, but tequila MUST contain at least 51% Blue Agave.

Tequila is a mature drink. That doesn't mean you have to be mature to drink it, though! The Blue Agave plant takes anywhere from 8-12 years to mature enough to make tequila. Tequila is almost made from the heart of the Blue Agave plant, called the pina. The pina can even weigh up to 200 pounds when harvested!

There are three main categories of tequila:
Blanco: This is unaged and bottled within two months of distillation.
Reposado: This type is aged between two and twelve months in barrels.
Anejo: This is aged between 1-3 years in small oak barrels.

There are also two other types:
Joven or Oro: This is a mixture of Blanco and Reposado tequilas.
Extra Anejo: Aged 3-5 years in oak barrels.

In Mexico, Tequila is drank neat, without the lime and salt.

Tequila is closer to a lily than a cactus! While the Tequila plant looks like a cactus, it's actually in the lily family.
