Tequila Day!
If there's one day we believe in celebrating, it's TEQUILA DAY! July 24th is known as Tequila Day, and there's really only one way to celebrate it - by drinking this flavorful beverage (or shooting it *wink*). Here are a few fun facts about tequila that you may not have known, and a peek at our tequila menu at Lazy Gators!
1. Did you know that tequila is made from the blue agave plant? According to WebMD, the core of the plant contains aquamiel, also known as "honey water," which is then used for syrup (and tequila) production.
2. Tequila is mezcal, but mezcal is NOT tequila. The biggest difference between the two is the plant. Tequila must be produced using blue agave, but some agave plants are used to make mezcal, even if only a single batch.
3. The machete that is used to chop agave leaves is called a coa, and it has circular blades. The men who use the coa are called jimadors.
4. Do you <3 agave? Well, that would make sense, since Tequila is produced by removing the heart (aka piƱa) of the agave plant, which can weigh anywhere from 80 to 200 pounds! The heart is stripped of its leaves and then cooked to remove the sap. That sap is then fermented and distilled.
